چکیده

The vast power of iterated recurrence is tamed by data ramification: if a function over words is definable by ramified recurrence and composition, then it is feasible, i.e. computable in polynomial time, i.e. any computation using the first n input symbols can have at most p(n) distinct configurations, for some polynomial p. Here we prove a dual result for coinductive data: if a function over streams is definable by ramified corecurrence, then any computation to obtain the first n symbols of the output can have at most p(n) distinct configurations, for some polynomial p. The latter computation is by multi-cursor finite state transducer on streams. A consequence is that a function over finite streams is definable by ramified corecurrence iff it is Turing-computable in logarithmic space. Such corecursive definitions over finite streams are of practical interest, because large finite data is normally used as a knowledge base to be consumed, rather than as recurrence template. Thus, we relate a syntactically restricted computation model, amenable to static analysis, to a major complexity class for streaming algorithms.

Ramified Corecurrence and Logspace

Ramified recurrence over free algebras has been used over the last two decades to provide machineindependent characterizations of major complexity classes. We consider here ramification for the dual setting, referring to coinductive data and corecurrence rather than inductive data and recurrence. Whereas ramified recurrence is related basically to feasible time (PTime) complexity, we show here ...

Implicit complexity for coinductive data: a characterization of corecurrence

We propose a framework for reasoning about programs that manipulate coinductive data as well as inductive data. Our approach is based on using equational programs, which support a seamless combination of computation and reasoning, and using productivity (fairness) as the fundamental assertion, rather than bi-simulation. The latter is expressible in terms of the former. As an application to this...

Modelling and Sampling Ramified Objects with Substructure-Based Method

This paper describes a technique that speeds up both the modelling and the sampling processes for a ramified object. By introducing the notion of substructure, we divide the ramified object into a set of ordered substructures, among which only a part of basic substructures is selected for implicit modelling and point sampling. Other substructures or even the whole object can then be directly in...

Wildly Ramified Galois Representations and a Generalization of a Conjecture of Serre

Serre’s conjecture relates two-dimensional odd irreducible characteristic p representations to modular forms. We discuss a generalization of this conjecture (due to Ash and Sinnott) to higher-dimensional Galois representations. In particular, we give a refinement of the conjecture in the case of wildly ramified Galois representations and we provide computational evidence for this refinement.
